Hubbard Brook: Lessons from the Forest

From acid rain to the decline of songbirds, new book by R.T Holmes and G.E. Likens tells the fascinating story of one of the most intensively studied landscapes on Earth

For more than half a century, scientists have converged on the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in the White Mountains of New Hampshire to explore how forest ecosystems work, from the flow of water and nutrients to the ecology and behavior of forest animals. HUBBARD BROOK: The Story of a Forest Ecosystem captures the rich history of research at the site, including how it has transformed environmental policy, resource management, and forestry practices – locally, regionally, and nationally.

Winter Climate Change in the Northern Forest

The meteorological and hydrological records that have been kept at Hubbard Brook since 1955 can be used to examine the changing climate and its effects on the forest ecosystem. Data clearly demonstrate that many characteristics of the winter months have changed significantly over the past 50 years and that the direction of these changes is generally consistent with climate model projections of human-driven climate change for the 21st century. Among the key scientific findings and observations relating to winter climate are significant increases in air temperature, snow depth and cover, ice cover, and frozen soils.
