F. Herbert Bormann, Co-Founder of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study, Passes Away

It is with great sadness that we must announce the recent death of F. Herbert Bormann at the age of 90. Herb was a co-founder of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study in 1963 with Gene Likens, Robert Pierce, and Noye Johnson. A co-discoverer of acid rain in North America, Herb was also a deep thinker about ecological matters and helped devise the “small watershed approach” of studying forest ecosystems. He was also a terrific teacher and close friend to hundreds of people in the Hubbard Brook community. His humanism, sense of wonder of the natural world, and warm smile will be deeply missed.
